Paralegal Technology Glossary

I study Paralegal Technology at Ahuntsic College. I have been studying for 2 years. This is a glossary of difficult law terms that we used in my program. My glossary would help me to use these words more frequently in my vocabulary. At the end of my English book, I have a glossary of many words, and I choose 20 of them. After that, I read some definitions in google, and I pick the best one to explain.

affidavit

noun

a written statement that someone makes after promising officially to tell the truth.

Example: You will then be asked to fill out an affidavit of eligibility to prove none of the exceptions, listed under rules below, apply to you.

noun

the finding or decision of a jury on the matter submitted to it in trial.

Example: The verdict was not guilty.

prejudice

noun

harm or injury that results or may result from some action or judgment.

Example: prejudice resulting from delay in the institution of the proceedings.

noun

a person who practices or studies law; an attorney or a counselor.

Example: The power of the lawyer is in the uncertainty of the law.

incarceration

noun

the act of putting or keeping someone in prison or in a place used as a prison.

Example: The prisoner was sentenced to five months of incarceration.

felony

noun

a crime for which the punishment in federal law may be death or imprisonment for more than one year

Example: In the case of child trafficking, it is a felony of the third degree.

guilty

adjective

Culpable of or responsible for a specified wrongdoing.

Example: The jury has to decide whether a person is guilty or innocent of a crime.

a belief or set of beliefs held and taught by a Church, political party, or other group.

Example: I found 2 doctrines about civil responsibility

complainant

noun

a person who makes a formal complaint in a law court.

Example: he burden of proof is on the complainant to bring forth any evidence they have.

verb

A written or spoken agreement, especially one concerning employment, sales, or tenancy, that is intended to be enforceable by law.

Example: "both parties must sign employment contracts"

condemn

verb

to severely punish someone who has committed a crime, or to force someone to suffer.

Example: the rebels had been condemned to death.

jurisprudence

noun

s a legal term for all decisions made by the courts across Canada. It can also be used to refer to all court decisions made in a specific area of the law.

Example: family law jurisprudence.

notary

noun

a person authorized to perform certain legal formalities, especially to draw up or certify contracts, deeds, and other documents for use in other jurisdictions.

Example: This agreement was drawn up and verified by a notary.

pleading

adjective

A formal statement of the cause of an action or defense.

Example: The lawyer presented the pleading for his client.

noun

money given to support an undertaking that someone will perform a duty, pay their debts, etc.; a guarantee.

Example: the judge granted bail with a surety of $500.

et an amount of money that a court requires someone to pay to make up for injuring someone.

Example: He may sue the company to recover damages for injuries caused by the device.

subpoena

noun

a writ ordering a person to attend a court.

Example: a subpoena may be issued to compel their attendance.

Beyond reasonable doubt

is the legal burden of proof required to affirm a conviction in a criminal case.

Example: The judge or jury must decide if the accused is guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

Example: the campaign for penal reform.

noun

intervention in a dispute in order to resolve it; arbitration.
